Go see the Amur tiger cubs at Wichita’s zoo

I cheered when I heard that a tiger at our local zoo, the Sedgwick County Zoo, had given birth to two cubs this summer. More tigers in the state of Kansas is always a good thing for this Mizzou grad! But it’s not just my collegiate loyalty coming through — who doesn’t love the chance to see tiger cubs! The cubs were born to 8-year-old Talali on July 6 of this year and they were introduced to the public in late September. Lee and I finally made it out to see them this past weekend. The female is named Natasha and the male is Tsar. Natasha was very active…

LEVIA: my travel agent and navigation system

Here’s another guest post from Lee. I swear I didn’t pay him to write this! For most trips that we take as a couple, I contribute a good amount of time in planning, picking kosher hotels and booking the flights. If it’s a sports trip then I’m also in charge of picking the venues and getting those tickets. This last trip the only thing I did was get the plane tickets based on the dates provided from MeLinda. I knew where we were going but the details beyond that were pretty unknown to me. MeLinda did put together an impressive agenda but I only took a quick look. So I…

The wildest animals we saw at the Grand Canyon: French girls

So there we are, taking our first looks at the majestic Grand Canyon from its north rim. It’s 9 a.m. and we’ve brought our breakfast with us to eat as we gaze at the colors and shadows on the formations in the morning light. We are in the main lodge building of the Grand Canyon Lodge, which is the centerpiece of the National Historic Landmark lodge and cabins on the edge of the rim. I’m taking photos of Lee looking out into the canyons from the three large floor-to-ceiling windows in a cavernous recreation room filled with leather couches and chairs. “What are those girls doing?” I hear a nearby…

    Trip rant: LUV bites

Here is Lee’s rant after flying on Southwest (which is listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol LUV) for the first time since the airline took over AirTran service at our home airport in Wichita, Kan. You know the friend we all have who always says he will be there to pick you up at a certain time and it never fails: you get the ride but you are always late? Well my new friend who just moved into the neighborhood, Southwest Airlines, has become that guy. Yes, Southwest Airlines drives a little more expensive vehicle than my friend’s Ford Festiva but the concept is the…

Trip Guide: Sea Life Kansas City & Legoland Discovery Center

On our trips across North America, Central America and the Caribbean, we often seek out zoos, aquariums and other opportunities to get up close with wildlife and sea creatures. So when I heard an aquarium had opened in April 2012 in Kansas City, Mo., I was happy to finally have an aquarium to visit within a three-hour drive from our home in Wichita, Kan. Then I found out it was a chain … and I have to admit that I was a little deflated. Well, I shouldn’t have been an aquarium snob! While it’s not going to land in the Top 5 of U.S. aquariums, Sea Life Kansas City is…
