#Schummer14: Day 21-23 recap of Summer of Schnyder ~ Cape Cod, Massachusetts

The subtitle of this post, written jointly by Lee & MeLinda, is: 43 {miles & years} ~~~ We were already three weeks into our month-long road trip from Kansas to Maine and still hadn’t had any completely relaxing days where we laid by the pool or on the beach reading a book all day. We’re not complaining – we were on a 30-day vacation after all; we are just explaining that most of our days were full of activity. As we drove toward Cape Cod on a Monday morning, Day 21 of our month-long road trip, we figured this might finally be the time to stop for a day and…

#Schummer14: Day 20 recap of Summer of Schnyder ~ Rhode Island

After 376 miles of hurried driving the day before, we drove only 17 miles on Day 20 as we spent the day in and around Providence and Pawtucket, Rhode Island – the country’s tiniest state. We had a great breakfast at a small bakery called Pastiche that our friend, Charlie, scouted out in the nearby Federal Hill area (it’s the city’s Little Italy). I had a lemon cream tart with blackberry sauce and a spiced chai latte. Lee opted for munchkins from Dunkin’ Donuts – amazingly, it was his first stop there the entire trip (even though it often feels like there is a DD on every corner in the…

#Schummer14: Day 19 recap of Summer of Schnyder ~ nowhere to stay

In our many travel adventures we have always been able to find a hotel even if it’s at the last minute. A lot of the time we use Hotwire, Priceline, etc. because I love a deal and hate to pay full price for a room. It has always been a game with MeLinda and I when placing a bid on Priceline, trying to determine if we could have gotten that room for five dollars less. When I worked at the corporate offices of Candlewood Hotel I always had a pretty good idea of what the typical room would go for and what the Priceline price should be. We have many…

#Schummer14: Day 15-18 recap of Summer of Schnyder ~ Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island, Maine

A week before our visit to Acadia National Park, it was named as the Favorite Place in America by the viewers of Good Morning America. We’ve been to a number of national parks and this definitely rates as one of our favorites. What I liked best about it was the diversity and accessibility – you could be on a sandy beach, in a rocky cove looking up at a lighthouse, at the highest peak on the east coast (Cadillac Mountain – 1,530 feet), in dense forest or taking an easy walk around a postcard-perfect pond. This is one of the places along our trip that I hope to get back…

#Schummer14: Day 13-14 recap of Summer of Schnyder ~ New Hampshire & Portland, Maine

Day 13: Franconia, New Hampshire We stayed a couple of nights at Gale River Motel in Franconia, which gave us access to many outdoor activities around the White Mountain range. We spent most of our time in the Franconia Notch State Park. I’ve become a fan of driving through the narrow notches in the mountains … well, Lee is driving and I’m taking photos from the car! The best way to tell you about New Hampshire is to show you what we did while there: Day 14: Franconia, New Hampshire, to Portland, Maine We had a hard rain for the drive over to Portland so we didn’t stop anywhere along the…
