Pardon the interruption – I got lost in the wheat

Well it’s been a crazy start to April & I’ve yet to make a post this month. The more activity in my life (which means more blog material), the less time I have to actually blog! It has been a good learning experience, too, that it can be tough to blog while traveling. I did a decent job of sharing the trip on Facebook in real-time but I couldn’t go into much detail there.

For those of you living in Lawrence, Kansas, you may not have noticed this great basketball tournament going on! The Wichita State Shockers made a historic run to make it to the Final Four so the past few weeks have been full of watching basketball on TV, making plans to travel with the team and road tripping to Atlanta and back.

Over the years, Lee and I have often had the conversation about what we would do if one of our teams ever made it to a championship-type game. Do you stay at home so you can really watch and analyze the big game, or do you go and join the pandemonium of such a big game?

Honestly, I didn’t think we’d ever really have to face the situation! The closest I came was in November 2007: Missouri’s football team was 11-1, ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press poll for the first time since 1960 and needed just a victory against Oklahoma in the Big 12 Conference championship game to play for the national championship. Yeah, we lost the game 38-17 and went to the Cotton Bowl, where the Tigers beat the Darren McFadden-led Arkansas Razorbacks.

Lee regretted never going to a World Series game when his Kansas City Royals or Houston Astros were playing (especially now that he realizes neither team may make it back there in our lifetimes!). So it was clear we had to go when Wichita State beat No. 1 and No. 2 seeds to make it to the Final Four for the first time since 1965.

Look for a series of posts on the places we visited on the trip and the experience of following your team to the Final Four — it’s something I’m not sure I’ll ever get to experience again (c’mon Tigers, make me believe!).
